The Goethe-University Frankfurt-am-Main invites applications for 2 post-doctoral positions as Researchers in Late Antique Christianity in the Near East (E13 TV-G-U) within the Leibniz research project „Polyphony of Late Antique Christianity“ (directed by Prof. Dr. Hartmut Leppin). The full-time position is to be filled from 1st April 2016 onwards. The initial duration of the contract will be 36 months and the salary is set according to TV-H 13. The project is financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

„Polyphony of Late Antique Christianity“ strives to develop a new picture of Christianity in Late Antiquity integrating Mediterranean and Near Eastern perspectives (understood in a very large sense, extending from Ethiopia to Armenia and Georgia). We are looking for new members of the team to work on their own research analysing texts in languages of the ancient Christian Near East (as for example Syriac, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, Ge’ez, Arabic) and thereby would contribute to demonstrating the diversity the diversity of Christianity. As a member of the team the researcher will be obliged to share the research tasks of the team, e.g. preparing workshops, conferences, publications and participating in colloquia.

The ideal candidate needs to have an excellent doctorate in History of Religion, Oriental Philology, Ancient Judaism, Ancient Christianity, Ancient History or related fields solid knowledge of English, German and an additional modern language excellent knowledge of the relevant ancient language(s).

Candidates, whose research specialism may be in any field of Patristic thought and culture to the end of the first millennium, should have a doctorate in the field. The person appointed will be expected to undertake high quality research in Patristics, to teach for the Tripos, Diploma and the MPhil, to supervise doctoral students, and to undertake some administration.

The Department of Classics, Humanities & Italian Studies is an interdisciplinary department, and for this position, in the Humanities Program, we are particularly interested in applicants whose work treats the complexities of intercultural exchange, conflict, coexistence and communication in the Mediterranean Basin between 700 and 1500 CE. Applicants should have strong interests in notions of community, identity, and cultural belonging, and will collaborate in scholarship, teaching and curriculum development with others who work in different geographical, temporal or disciplinary areas. We seek scholars who focus on literature, cultural history, visual culture, performance, or philosophy, and we prefer those who work at the intersection of at least two disciplinary perspectives.

A PhD in any related Humanities discipline in hand by July 15, 2016 is required.

Post-doctoral Research Scholar – Columbia University

Post-doctoral Research Scholar, Byzantine Architectural History, 2015–2016

The Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University is offering a one-year post-doctoral research position in the field of Byzantine architectural history. The successful candidate will help to develop content and establish a research infrastructure for the Istanbul Documentation Project. Developed by Professor Holger A. Klein in collaboration with the Media Center for Art History and partnering research institutions in Turkey, the Istanbul Documentation Project was established to create a digital platform for the virtual presentation of Istanbul’s Late Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments and to provide a rich resource for individual study, research, and teaching in the classroom. The successful candidate will have a strong background in Byzantine architectural history, interest in Digital Humanities projects, and experience working in Turkey. Depending on the candidate’s educational and personal background, the fellow will be based either on Columbia’s Morningside campus in New York, the Columbia Global Center, Turkey (Istanbul), or the Columbia Global Center, Europe (Paris).

The award is for one year, with the possibility for renewal if funding should become available. The salary is $52,250. The position comes with an allowance for travel and research in conjunction with work on-site in Istanbul.
