Research Scholarships for Young Researchers

The Hardt Foundation for the Study of Classical Antiquity, in pursuit of its ambition to promote the study of the culture and civilization of Greco-Roman antiquity, offers young researchers an opportunity to apply for research scholarships covering stays of two to four weeks.

Areas of research supported are Greek and Latin language and literature, ancient history, ancient philosophy and ancient law. The aim of the research stay is the publication of articles, books or other written contributions.

 Application Deadlines:

·      November 30th for stays requested between early February and the end of June

·      April 30th for stays requested between early September and the end of November

La Fondation Hardt pour l’étude de l’Antiquité classique, désireuse d’intensifier le rayonnement de la culture et de la civilisation du monde gréco-romain, offre sur candidature des bourses assurant aux jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs un financement pour des périodes pouvant aller de deux à quatre semaines.

Les disciplines retenues sont la langue et la littérature grecques et latines, l’histoire ancienne, la philosophie et le droit antiques. L’objectif des recherches est la rédaction d’articles, de livres ou d’autres études.

 

Dates limites de candidatures :

·      le 30 novembre pour les demandes de séjour entre début février et fin juin

·      le 30 avril pour les demandes de séjour entre début septembre et fin novembre

Ecole d’été – Swansea Summer School in Ancient Languages

Swansea Summer School in Ancient Languages

Swansea University and the South West Wales Classical Association are pleased to announce the second Summer School in Ancient Languages which will take place 17 – 30 July 2016.

Courses

One- and two-week intensive courses are available in Beginners, Post-Beginners, Intermediate, Post-Intermediate, and Advanced Latin and Greek, Beginners and Post-Beginners Hieroglyphs, and Medieval Latin.

There are 3 hours of tuition every weekday (2 on Wednesdays), and extracurricular talks, films, and trips to sites of historical interest in the Wales on Wednesday afternoons in weekends.

Bursaries

We are able to offer part bursaries to participants with low income and students. Discounts are also available for early-bird registration (until end November) and students at all levels of education.

‘Byzantine Studies Alive’

Call for papers for the conference ‘Byzantine Studies Alive’, on the importance of Byzantine Studies and Byzantine Heritage, to be held at the Radboud University Nijmegen (June 16-17, 2016). We welcome proposals for papers on the following two themes:  

1) Byzantium as a key player in the relationship between East and West, A.D. 330 -1453

Byzantium can be seen as a leading catalyst in the political, cultural, economic and religious exchange between East and West, to be detected in the relationship both between Byzantium and Latin Western Europe and Byzantium and the Islamic world.

We especially welcome the papers on this theme to include analyses on 

(a) Agents of exchange such as rulers, bishops, popes, diplomats, pilgrims, writers  or artists
(b) Objects of transcultural encounter and transfer such as, (religious) monuments, texts (hagiography, historiography, liturgical texts, travel accounts)  decorations, liturgical objects, relics or diplomatic gifts.

These agents and objects can be regarded as part of the larger historical context within which Europe took shape in the Middle Ages and beyond.

2) The position of Byzantine heritage, 7th Century – present day

The definite end of the Byzantine Empire is marked by the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453. Through its history, however, the dimension and identity of the Empire was not one identical continuum. In different phases of development (Arab conquests, iconoclasm, Crusaders period) Byzantine monuments and artefacts were appropriated or under threat, a phenomenon that continued after the Ottoman conquest.

We especially welcome the papers on this theme to include analyses on:

(a) Appropriation and transformation of Byzantine heritage (objects, monuments, cities)
(b) Display of Byzantine heritage in Museum Collections
(c) Preservation and restoration of Byzantine heritage
(d) Byzantine heritage under threat

Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations Fellowships

Koç University invites applications from junior and senior scholars specializing in the archaeology, art history, history, and allied disciplines of Turkey from the Neolithic through the Ottoman eras. Fellowships, which include accommodation, travel, and stipend, will be given to approximately 10 Ph.D candidates and 10 scholars with Ph.D to spend one academic year in Istanbul at Koç University’s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations. Successful candidates will be required to be resident in Istanbul during the 9-month academic year (September 15-June 15). Some senior fellowships may be granted on a semester basis (September 15-January 31 or February 1-June 15). A small number of Non-Residential fellowships is also available for those already resident in Istanbul and/or with families.
