DIOGENES JOURNAL

Since its launch in January 2014, Diogenes is an open-access and peer-review online journal edited by the postgraduate students at the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies, University of Birmingham.

It aims to bring together postgraduate and early career researchers and provide a forum at which they can further develop their research ideas and communicate them to a general audience.

The articles published in Diogenes cover a wide range of research interests, yet they all fall under the umbrella of the often-separate fields of Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies. We look forward to any article that actively engages with any of these fields, from universities in the UK and abroad. It is published twice a year: in April and October.

Therefore, indicative topics cover yet are not limited to:

  • Byzantine archaeology, material culture, art history and textual analyses
  • Ottoman history, archaeology, literature and art
  • Modern Greek history, literature, film, pop culture, and politics
  • Book Reviews in BOMGS
  • Theoretical Reflections and Methodological explorations on BOMGS

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

The editorial team is proud to announce the Call for Contributions for the 14th issue, to be published in Summer 2022. We look forward to receiving contributions in English by postgraduate students in Byzantine, Ottoman, and/or Modern Greek Studies in the UK and abroad, in the following forms:

Article

We welcome articles on topics of history, archaeology, anthropology, or on any other field relating to the three areas of our Centre. Contributions should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words and must include a bibliography (excepted from the word count). Articles should follow the Chicago Manual of Style and should include a 150-word abstract. It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission in written form to use any copyrighted image.

Book Review

Reviews of between 700 and 1,000 words are welcome on any work published in the last three years in the fields of Byzantine, Ottoman, and/or Modern Greek Studies. If you are interested in contributing, please contact the general editors about the choice of book for review before submitting.

Supplementum

This section aims to present the diversity of postgraduate research activities and opportunities in Byzantine, Ottoman, and/or Modern Greek Studies. Contributions between 500 and 1,000 words are welcome. Types of contribution may include, but are not limited to, archaeological reports, thesis summaries, conference reports, workshop reports, student society introductions, notices of events, etc.

Raconter, n°2022–2 : Raconter

Dans son numéro 2022 – 2, la revue Perspective souhaite poser la question des relations entre narration, art et histoire de l’art. Qu’il s’agisse des récits sur lesquels se fondent les images et les objets d’art, de ceux que (se) constituent ses regardeurs, ou des «mises en récits» opérées par les historiens et les historiennes de l’art, ce numéro entend s’emparer de l’acte de raconter comme d’un outil heuristique aussi fécond que déstabilisant. L’image et l’objet d’art racontent, même en l’absence de contenu diégétique figuré, ne serait-ce qu’en tant que témoins d’une époque ou de pratiques – ne serait-ce qu’en tant que vecteurs de narrativité. Les récits visuels ainsi déployés ne cessent de générer d’autres récits – fictions ou légendes, articles scientifiques ou divagations rêveuses; dialogues d’œuvres entre elles ou soliloques des regardeurs. Récits de l’histoire de l’art, également, tant les historiens et les historiennes de l’art ne cessent de raconter ce processus tout en le constituant de manière performative, dans ses multiples emboîtements et ses allers-retours, évoluant dans ces zones mouvantes entre fait et fiction, expression et narration, description, analyse et projection.

Prière de faire parvenir vos propositions (un résumé de 2000 à 3000signes, un titre provisoire, une courte bibliographie sur le sujet, et une biographie de quelques lignes) à l’adresse de la rédaction (revue-perspective@inha.fr) avant le 1er juillet 2021.

Perspective prenant en charge les traductions, les projets seront examinés par le comité de rédaction quelle que soit la langue. Les auteurs des propositions retenues seront informés de la décision du comité de rédaction à la fin du mois de juillet 2021, tandis que les articles seront à remettre pour le 15décembre 2021.

Les articles soumis, d’une longueur finale de 25000 ou 45000 signes selon le projet envisagé, seront définitivement acceptés à l’issue d’un processus anonyme d’évaluation par les pairs.

Appel à contribution – IMC Leeds 2021 et ICMS Kalamazoo 2021

The links below are for two CFPs for two series of sessions which we’re planning to submit to the Organizing Committees of the IMC Leeds 2021 and the ICMS Kalamazoo 2021. You can find all the details in the attached PDFs. The deadline for submissions is 31 July. It is, of course, still difficult to say whether these will be digital or ‘in-person’ events. Online International Conference. Communicating Objects. Material, Literary and Iconographic Instances of Objects in a Human Universe in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. University of Bucharest (Department of Ancient History, Archaeology and History of Art, Faculty of History)November 27th-29th 2020/Appel à contributions. Material culture occupies a special place in most research conducted on Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Interdisciplinary approaches have allowed for the enrichment of traditional paradigms used by archaeologists and historians, as a follow-up to the valorisation of the social life of things, or of the agency characterising objects in any given society. Objects which are deliberately associated are more susceptible of becoming expressive in the presence of humans. From this perspective, associating objects, and exploring potential reasons for their association and for their compatibility, opens up multiple possibilities for reflection.

Here are some suggested topics, meant to inspire, without limiting, the participants’ choice of subject matter:

        the place of associated objects in literary sources. Suggested lines of investigation: the place of associated objects in literary discourses, their role in the construction of characters or as vehicles used to advance the action, to create images or to emphasize key moments in the economy of the texts; the practices of writing about objects, ways of selecting and including them in texts, and the study of certain characteristics of objects judged as indispensable to the fulfillment of said objects’ narrative roles.

        the place of associated objects in constructing images, be they objects carrying images or objects being represented. Suggested lines of investigation: the manners of representing objects, the objects’ insertion in representations and their contributions to visually illustrated discourses.

        the intrinsic materiality of objects places the discussion in the field of archaeology. From this perspective and for the purpose of a better investigation of associated objects and their potential meanings, one (though by no means the only) possible line of enquiry would turn the researcher’s gaze towards funerary archaeology.

Beyond these suggestions, the synchronic and comparative approaches to various media where objects are placed in association (texts, materiality, images) are strongly encouraged, in order to better assess multiple perspectives and perceptions to which the objects could be subjected, as well as the ways in which objects, once put together in particular and deliberate ways, acquire the capacity of acting as agents.

Accepted languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish.

Deadline: September 15th 2020.

Abstracts: no more than 300 words to be submitted at the e-mail address objetsdialogue@gmail.com. The abstract should also contain the title of the presentation, the name of the author(s) and the home institution(s).

Duration of each presentation: 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussions.

Announcement of accepted proposals: September 30th 2020.

Digital poster section: a poster gallery will also be available for researchers preferring to send their presentation in this form. The gallery will be open to the public for the whole duration of the conference. On demand, the posters may be accompanied by a recorded audio presentation, no more than 10 minutes in length.
